Adorable Bun Hairstyles You Need To Try ASAP

Gray Hair No More

What’s worse than seeing a perfectly-sculpted messy bun on Pinterest, only to test it out on yourself and realize yours looks like more like deformed thumb than a trendy updo? Nothing… Absolutely nothing is worse. Bun hairstyles are supposed to look effortless, but more often than not, they are the most time-consuming, frustrating styles to accomplish. We get it, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Follow along with us as we show you just how to replicate these adorable bun hairstyles, sharing with you all our secrets and the products you’ll need to make it happen.
Loose Chignon
Posted on Instagram by @sarahwhair
The key to this low bun hairstyle is the texture. You’ll want to “rough up” your hair with a texturizing product, whether it be a spray or a powder. Once your hair has that grit from the product, you’ll want to use your hands (not a comb!) to pull your hair into a low pony.
For ladies with fine or short hair: Tease the ponytail to give it extra volume before you wrap it into a bun and secure in place with bobby pins. If it looks too neat, gently pull out pieces of hair to acheive that tousled, carefree look.

Sleek Top Knot

This sleek updo is perfect for any occasion, from a shopping day to a formal event. To pull it off, you’ll want to catch your hair on a day where frizz is at bay. If split ends and frizz are constants in your life, use a shine serum to tame them. After applying the product (a little goes a long way!) all over, take a boar bristle brush and pull hair up into a super high pony. Then, wrap hair tightly into a top knot and secure loose ends into the hair tie and with bobby pins.

Half Up Space Buns
Posted on Instagram by @gracenrea
All hair types and lengths can achieve this hairstyle, and you can customize it however you’d like. First, style your hair as usual (soft waves look great with this bun hairstyle) and part as close to the center of your head as you’re comfortable with. Then, separate two sections where the buns will go tie into ponytails with clear elastics. Finish this style by wrapping the hair into buns and securing the ends inside the elastics.

Thick Braid and Loose, Low Bun Hairstyle
Posted on Instagram by @hairbyasla
There’s little styling involved with this look, so as long as you know how to braid or fishtail, you can pull this one off. Simply section off the front part of your hair for the braid, and pull the remaining hair into a loose, low bun. (A scrunchie works great and looks adorable.) Then, braid the sectioned chunk of hair to the ends and secure with a clear elastic. Take the end of the braid and hide it underneath the bun. To get that romantic, feminine touch, add a few curls to the face-framing pieces in the front.

Festival Bun Hairstyle
Posted on Instagram by @millcreekbotanticals
With Stagecoach right around the corner and Lollapolooza this summer, you’ll need festival hairstyles on hand at all times. And what’s more fun than a glittery hot mess? Simply part your hair down the middle, section into even sections at the top (use the end of a fine-tooth comb to get perfectly straight parts), and french braid until you’ve covered the top of your head. Then secure with clear elastics and wrap the ponytails into buns. Add the glitter of your choice to the part, and you’re festival ready.

Braided Mohawk Bun
Posted on Instagram by @hairby_chrissy
You don’t have to have hair down to your behind to rock this style (but if you want to, check out these hair extensions).  Just section off a strip of hair right down the middle and braid straight back until you meet the back of your head. If it’s not loose enough, secure it with a hairtie first and then gently pull the braid apart with your fingers until it loosens up. Take your favorite scrunchie or bandana and loop the ponytail into a bun.

Knotted Bun

To replicate J-Lo’s top knot, you’ll want to start by pulling your hair up into a super high, tight pony. Use a shine serum to tame any flyaways. Then, loop the ponytail into a perky bun, leaving a few inches of hair out to wrap around the base of the bun. Secure any loose ends with bobby pins and adjust the bun with your fingers as needed.

Top Knot with a Scrunchy
Posted on Instagram by @leoniehanne
If you own a comb and a scruchy, you’ll be able to replicate this bun hairstyle in no time. Simply take a comb or brush and guide your hair into a high pony. Hold it together with your hands and tie into a bun with a giant scrunchy or bandana. If your hair notoriously falls out of updos, you can secure it with a regular hairtie first and cover it with the scrunchy.

Effortless Top Knot

If you have thick hair, this bun hairstyle is for you. All you need to do is throw your hair up into a loose, high pony and wrap the pony into the desired bun shape. Then, tuck the ends of the hair underneath the bun into the hairtie. If if looks messy, don’t worry – it’s supposed to.

Curled Side Bun

The curled side bun works with all hair types and lengths, but it’s an adorable option for women with short hair. Start by curling your hair (.75-inch curling wand if you want tight curls and 1.5-inch if you want looser ones). Pull hair into a side ponytail. Then start taking the ends of your hair and forming them into a bun shape, looping them under and securing with bobby pins.

Boho Bun With Braids
Posted on Instagram by @tantrumforhair
The dainty braids in this bun hairstyle pull the look together. If you need to add some texture, use a texturizing dry shampoo all over your hair. Start with braiding a few small sections at the top (feel free to do as little or as many as you’d like). Then pull hair into a loose, low bun and leave out some face framing pieces.

Carefree Messy Bun

If Julianne Hough can rock a super messy bun on the red carpet, you can wear one just about anywhere. Add a fun flair to this bun hairstyle by french braiding hair starting at the hairline, up until the spot you want your bun located. Then, gather the remaining hair and twist into a top knot, securing with a clear elastic and bobbypins.

Kendall’s unique bun hairstyle is surprisingly easy to accomplish but only works if you have hair long enough to leave out of the bun. Just pull your hair up into a top knot and loop the ends of it through the ponytail holder far enough for them to hang straight down.

Half Up Top Knot

To pull off this bad-ass bun hairstyle, you’ll want to clip in some hair extensions first for length and thickness. Then use a boar bristle brush to smooth out hair as you pull it into a high, half-up ponytail. Wrap the hair around until it forms a top knot and secure ends with bobby pins.

Tousled Top Knot

This adorable short haircut is spunky and easy to replicate. Style hair straight or curled and pull up into a messy top knot. Once you’ve got the top knot figured out, mist a texturizing spray all over the hair, and use your fingers to tousle your style until it looks just right.

Romantic Messy Bun Hairstyle

If you’ve ever attempted a messy bun, you know they rarely every turn out this perfect. But when they do? It’s a good day. A few quick tips to increase your chances of making it happen: Use lots of dry shampoo to give your hair the grit it needs to stay in an updo. Add hair extensions for length and thickness. Curl your hair first before pulling it up. And lastly, try teasing a ponytail before wrapping it into bun – you’ll have more control over its form that way.

Tucked Under Bun Hairstyle
Posted on Instagram by @sabrinadijkman
This elegant bun hairstyle is ideal for weddings, prom, or other formal events. There are a couple of different ways to make it happen, but our favorite technique starts with a headband. Start by applying a texturizing spray or powder, which will give your hair the extra grip it needs for this style to stay in place. Then, put the headband on – placed on top of your head, over the hair, and onto the nape. Start covering the headband with hair by tucking the hair into the headband towards the back of your head. Continue to do this until the ends are secured in the headband.

For voluptuous curls like these, it’s best to leave it to the experts – and by that we mean hair extensions (unless you were blessed with natural waist-length, thick locks). Once you’ve applied styled your hair the way you like, section the top half and pull it into a high pony. Leave a few face-framing pieces out. Then, wrap the pony in a circular motion to create a bun, and tuck the ends into the ponytail. Using your fingers, pull the bun to loosen it and make it bigger. Once it’s the size you’d like, pin it in place with bobbypins and mist with a light hairspray.

Boho Half Up Bun

The secret behind perfect soft waves like these? A good texturizing product and curling wand. Start with clean, dry hair. You can use any curling wand, but we love the Beach Waver for this look. Once you’ve curled your hair, run through it with a wide tooth comb and mist with texture spray. Then, pull the top half up and loop hair into a giant bun. If you’d like, braid a few of the curled pieces (as pictured), and secure the ends with clear elastics.

Fancy Bun With Floral Hairpiece
Posted on Instagram by @styled_by_olivia
To replicate this romantic wedding hairstyle (perfect for prom and other formal events, too!), you’ll need to start with clean, blown-dry hair. If your hair tends to fall out of updos, prep it with  Eufora Powder Lift to give it some texture. Then, pull it up into a loose high pony and use bobby pins to shape your bun and pin hair in place.
Optional: Wrap hair extension wefts around the base of the ponytail first to achieve a fuller, thicker-looking bun. Hide the wefts by wrapping hair into a bun and pinning overtop the wefts.
Finish off by adding in the floral hair piece of your choice!

Half Up Donut Bun

To achieve this bun hairstyle, you’ll need to have longer locks. Start by prepping your hair with smoothing products and shine serum (check out our recommendations below). Then, style your hair however you’d like (soft waves look great) and section off the top layer to pull back into a pony. Wrap the bun around the base of the pony and pull the ends of the hair directly through the center of the bun. To get it to stay, pull the bun tight and secure the base with bobby pins.
